What are Security Patrols – and why might you need them?
I wanted to give you a brief rundown of what a routine security patrol would do, and why it may be important to your business.
Security Patrols are physical inspections performed by trained and licensed security staff. They are performed for at-risk properties on a routine (but varied) schedule. They will be alert to a range of security matters and are trained to deal with those. I’ll go into details on what this means.
The benefit of this is; heavily reduced loss from criminal activities, reduced insurance premiums, the knowledge that your assets are properly protected, and the opportunity to prosecute these that may want to harm your property or assets.
Typically a security guard will have a round of properties to visit. Most usually a patrol is carried out outside of usual business hours, but there are some properties that may need to be paroled at different times.
A guard will visit a site anywhere from once to several times in a single shift, depending on the level of service that is required and the cost of what is being protected.
Once on site, a guard may drive around the perimeter (depending of course on that property size), but will always perform an on foot physical inspection Depending on the site they will check all obvious ingress points for disturbance, check doors and obvious winds are secured.
They will be alert for any unusual signs, such as individuals who would have no business being around, or anything that may affect the physical security of the property.
Of course, guards are on the road at all times and will respond to alarms. If a break-in is detected, or any interference with any alarmed part of a property is detected, our guards respond fast.
On arrival, they will rapidly determine if the alarm is genuine. If there is a sign that it is, after alerting appropriate police, they work out of any personal security is at risk (perhaps staff in other parts of a building etc), and the work to remove any offending persons from a property. They may affect a citizens arrest if a suspected person is obvious and can be done with minimal risk to their personal well being, or that of any immediate persons. If there is any risk, then the guard will record as many details as possible to allow police to follow up; this would include the detailed appearance of suspects, number of people, any vehicles driven and there make/model.
The most likely scenario though is that when you engage security staff, the presence, the threat if being discovered, are all too much for your average criminal. Most are cowards, and none want to be caught, so we are just stacking the odds in your favour. Not that we want anyone to be broken in to but having enough deterrents is enough to have many criminals to move on to an easier target. Of course, we can not account for every person and possibility, but we can do our best to limit the risk.
And your insurer will recognise this as well, reducing premiums on loss due to theft of physical property such as stock. In many cases making the whole finances of this proposition worthwhile in its self.
Gsec can provide several levels of physical security to premises, from a single guard visiting nightly, all the way up to permanent patrol by armed guards. There is no job that is too big for us to tackle, or too difficult to tackle logistically. Give us a call and we can let you know.
