Break-ins and intentional damage done to your business premises can be devastating for many business owners. For others, it has become an accepted fact of doing business.

While it may be usual in some area for criminal activities to go on, and for theft and other criminal acts to go on in your area, there are a few things that can and should do in order to make your business less of a target, and perhaps even make your area a little safer.

Get a decent security alarm system.

1/ Invest in a decent on-site alarm system. This should be your top priority. The alarm should have motion and heat activation, door and window sensors, cameras that are high definition, have night vision, and are remotely viewable, audible and visible alarms, and ideally a back-to-base system, to allow remote monitoring and dispatch of security staff or police.

Secure your premises.

2/ Make sure your premises are properly secured. Get good locks on doors and windows, and make sure they are locked when no one is present. Ensure access to the property can not be easily achieved by other means, such as roof areas, or a poorly constructed garage door.

Invest in security patrols.

3/ Where possible, invest in routine security patrols. You might even be able to get other business owners in the area to chip in so that patrols can be more frequent, but the cost is spread over several people.

lock up your valuables.

4/ Ensure everything of high value is kept hidden from public view. Make sure nothing is visible from the street especially after business hours.

Staff background check

5/ Without being a stalker or doing anything illegal, vet your staff that have access to valuable property and are in a position to access security equipment, including keys, locks and pin codes.

Use CCTV on site.

6/ Use interior cameras to watch staff. Promote that this is possible by signage and even having your staff sign an agreement that cameras are on the premises to prevent theft. This is a very good deterrent.

Use security warning signage.

7/ Without giving away everything that you are doing, make it very obvious that you have security in place and that it is maintained and used.

This should cover the important areas of your business.
The most important thing here is the deterrent effect that an obvious presence will have. A criminal is less likely to target a location that is clearly well protected. And if you do find yourself a target regardless, then your security systems come in to play.
