Is the answer “When I can afford it”?
Sadly, the answer is no. Of course, when you to move ahead to get a security system installed you are going to want to get a couple of different quotes. and you are going to have to get a system that fits your budget, but let me put this in perspective.
Imagine the unthinkable does, in fact, happen – someone breaks into your home with the intention of burglary. They steal the more obvious electronics, and perhaps some jewellery or cash that is in obvious view.
Part of your property is damaged in the process. Now add up the rough cost of that. Already in excess of what a security system will cost you.
And I know – you have home and contents insurance; well, of course, your premiums just went up as the insurer seeks to recoup the loss incurred. And more importantly, there is no insurance that is going to cover the emotional upset, and feeling that goes along with someone unlawfully entering your property. It’s a horrible feeling and one that I wouldn’t want anyone to have to go through.
On the flip side, any insurer worth their salt will offer you a significantly reduced premium for a professionally installed security system (and if yours doesn’t then there is a really good reason to start shopping around).
OK, so is the answer “today”.
That’s a little closer to the answer but is a little misleading too.
I would suggest to you that the smart thing to do is to shop around. There are a few factors that you are going to want to consider;
– is the overall price of the system recommended within my budget?
– is the system recommended to be appropriate for my use?
– is the installation company reputable; do they have good recommendations, are they experienced and knowledgeable?
– can they install in a reasonable timeframe?
All of these questions will have to be answered to your satisfaction.
I find that the hardest one to answer, especially for someone who is just starting to look around at security, is what is ‘appropriate’. I intend to go into some depth on this subject in future articles, but for now, it is important that you seek the advice of a person you truly can trust in the field. That person is usually going to be a professional installer. Try to speak to the owner of the company or someone who has been in the game for several years. Someone who is interested in you, and takes the time to understand your needs by asking lots of questions and shows you the options.
Hopefully, I have answered the question; ‘When is a good time to get a security system installed’, if somewhat obtusely. As soon as possible, but do your homework first.
