Home Security

This is a question that people occasionally ask me. Interestingly, the people who never ask me are people who have been recently broken in to. They know exactly why you need one.

Of course, given that none of us wants to have a break-in, let me go over some of the points without sounding like I am trying to scare you.

First, the good news. For the past 2 year period (ending March 2018), burglaries are down over 15%. The bad news is that this still means that over 20,000 offences were still committed a year for that period. Incredibly, half of these are ‘unsolved’ meaning that no one is ever arrested for the offence, let alone any property being recovered.

Now, difficult as this might be, imagine yourself in a position to want to break into a house with the intention of stealing something. You are desperate, possibly in dire need of money, or at the very least want to get in and out as fast as possible without anyone noticing.

You see a row of 5 houses before you.

You notice that 3 of those houses have very obvious alarms located on their roofline and prominent signage on the front windows. The next house shows no sign of anyone home, and the fifth house has mail stacking up and bins are not out where the rest of the street have their bins out.

It’s obviously put this way, but which house do you target?

Since it is only 20,000 houses being broken into in a year, it should be relatively simple to stack the odds against it being your house.

What we are talking about here is the simple fact of a deterrent – one that has some teeth of it is tested.

The most simple of home security system, with an obvious sign of an alarm such as a visible strobing blue light and siren placed on the exterior of the house at the roofline (where it can not be easily reached), together with stickers placed on the windows of the house.

Then take some more obvious precautions – make sure doors and windows are locked, don’t leave clearly expensive items in plain sight, and have someone make the house look lived in if you are away for any more than a day or two (empty letterbox, rotate lights left on inside etc).

Back to the original question then, why do you need an alarm system in your home? It is the very best deterrent against your home being broken in to. We may not be able to predict or account for every circumstance, but the small amount of money spent on a good system is surely a very good insurance policy, and hence a good investment.

So here is the point, get the best home security system within your budget, make it obvious to a would-be intruder, back it with 24/7 on-road patrols that can respond to an alarm, and then hopefully you will never need to use any of it. And that’s why you buy a home alarm.
